Our Favorite Podcasts

Writer: Danae & DarcyDanae & Darcy

Whether we’re taking a walk, cooking a meal, or working on a creative project, we feel these mindless tasks are best accompanied by a podcast. And with the kids back in school, the cooler weather driving us indoors, or perhaps the opportunity to pick up that knitting we started a while ago, we thought we might make a list of our favorite podcasts in the chance you may be looking for something to listen to during these humdrum days.

Before we begin, we would like to add a disclaimer. Even though we enjoy listening to these podcasts and readily suggest them, we don’t always agree with everything discussed. We do encourage you to listen discretionally. Disclaimer finished—on to the good stuff!

Danae’s Favorites:

Revive Our Hearts – I try to listen to this one early on in my day, so that I’m fixing my mind and my heart on truth. It does not take the place of my daily quiet time in God’s Word, but acts as a wholesome addition, and certainly a healthy alternative to many other things I could be listening to while I do mindless work. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/revive-our-hearts/id1181154045

The World and Everything in It – I do feel it is important to know what is going on in our country and around the World, but I avoid unhealthy doses of the news. This podcast is the best solution, as it provides the headlines from a Christian worldview and keeps me well informed on many fronts. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-world-and-everything-in-it/id454755642

The Trim Healthy Podcast – This one provides tips for healthy living in a way that is wholesome and sometimes comedic. While I wouldn’t turn to this podcast for theological insight (nor would I condone every one of their philosophies and theologies), I appreciate that they have a balanced and biblical approach to health. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/trim-healthy-podcast-w-serene-pearl-and-some-guy-named-danny/id1202267992

The Big Picture Podcast – These are captivating readings of “The Big Picture Story Bible” for children. We never use these as a replacement for family devotions, but they are a great resource for my daughter who can sit quietly for a spell and follow along in the book but isn’t quite able to read for herself. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-big-picture-story-bible/id1510561987

Darcy’s Favorites:

Remember Reading—This podcast adds another dimension to my love of classic children’s literature. The host gives fun background details about the story’s origin, sometimes interviews the author, or discusses what other books were inspired by the featured piece of literature. Some of my favorite episodes so far have been about Amelia Bedelia, Charlotte’s Web, and The Secret Garden. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/remember-reading-podcast/id1447897366

Close Reads—If you’re looking for a book- club-type discussion, without the fear of having to add anything to the conversation yourself, this is the podcast for you. This podcast has helped me read books I wouldn’t have picked up for myself, and to think critically about them. The hosts discuss the book over several episodes, and I enjoy having a second opinion on what I’ve read (though I don’t always agree with them, nor do they always agree with each other). https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/close-reads/id1191909632

The Daily Poem—This podcast and the Close Reads podcast are produced by the same group. Each weekday, the host reads through a notable poem twice (if its too long, he’ll read it just once) and briefly discusses some aspect about it. I’ve never been great with poetry, but this podcast has helped grow my appreciation for poetry and my ability to grasp it more quickly. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-daily-poem/id1433675871

Marked—The episode that sucked me into this podcast featured Karen Swallow Prior. I had recently been given a copy of Sense and Sensibility for which she wrote the introduction and the reflection questions. I’ve enjoyed listening to other episodes as they often discuss new Christian resources (primarily for women). I like to know a little bit more about the books before I decide to read them for myself. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/marked/id1042740607

Well, we certainly hope that maybe one of these podcasts would be one that you would enjoy and help you look forward to the humdrum activities of this season! Have a wonderful autumn!
